That's true too. And this can be worked around on Gentoo/FreeBSD at least 
providing a GENTOO kernel modified from GENERIC with atapicam support enabled 
by default.
At the end I can probably just code an hack to provide the basic capabilities 
in case CAM is not enabled.

Yes I found them, but the kernel has a way to get those capabilities (in 
atapi-cd.c sourcefile), so I'm wondering if there's a way to get those data 
from userland.
