I'm afraid you have.  I recall severe problems on IRIX before Gary
implemented -set_version.  Programs linked against libtool shared
libraries wouldn't run because the dynamic loader complained about
their not having been linked using -set_version, or some such.

Unfortunately, I can't see any solution for the problem other.
Disabling shared libraries altogether on platforms that are that
broken is an option, but I'm afraid that's not reasonable.
