Comment:
This patch is intended to improve compatibility of
the latest version of libtool with older versions of
automake and friends. Currently, the ltmain.sh script
fails in this context because key environment variables
are not being set in the Makefile generated by automake.
This patch causes ltmain.sh to set the variables to
reasonable defaults if it finds them unset.
For the record, this problem showed up in the Classpath
project where a recent version copy of ltmain.sh was
checked into the repository. This caused Classpath
builds to break for developers using older auto* tools
... until we tweaked the ltmain.sh script as indicated.

Comment:
Using an ltmain.sh from a new version of libtool without having the
corresponding version of libtool.m4 included in your configure script is not
supported.
