Unless someone enunciates a reason why the attached patch should not
be applied, I will be applying it *today* since I am leaving on a trip
tomorrow. This patch transfers the changes from branch 2.0 to head.
Note that branch 2.0 now optionally builds lt__strl.c. The minor
difference to make the build optional is included in this patch.
