Thank you very much for your detailed explanations.  They helped

I don't think we should screw with stuff at all.

For now, I see two different issues mentioned in this thread:
a) some setup where config.guess returns *msys* not *mingw*
b) some possible bug described by heromyth which I have not
   understood yet (i.e., been able to reproduce).

If I can reproduce (or someone can confirm) the first issue, we
can put in a patch which adds matching for *msys* everywhere where we
match *mingw* now.  If we can reproduce the second issue somehow, we can
think about a way to solving it.  But the snippets in the proposed patch
are certainly not the right fix.

So, heromyth, to state it again: please post a cut'n'paste version of
your bug report, so we can see exactly what is going on.
