FWIW, I have yet to see a setup where the extra loops over deplibs
have a significant time overhead.  Surely they should be minimized.

But if at all possible, can we just not branch now?  One lesson of
the branch-2-0 disaster is that we do not have enough manpower to 
maintain three branches _and_ get 2.0 done at the same time.  New
tests are certainly good, though.
