There has been no FreeBSD change. The libtool shlib numbering on
FreeBSD always was broken afaik.

No I'm not. I've CC'ed the port maintainer as well as the relevant
authority within FreeBSD. They should be able to explain you why they
would like this bug to be fixed upstream.
