Another problem with libtool 1.4 reported by a Debian user.

Using `AC_PROG_RANLIB' is rendered obsolete by `AC_PROG_LIBTOOL'
You should update your `aclocal.m4' by running aclocal.
My guess is that the problem is due to this condition:
if egrep '^AC_DEFUN\(A[MC]_PROG_LIBTOOL' aclocal.m4 >/dev/null 2>&1; then
which does not match this data:
>egrep '^AC_DEFUN\(\[A[MC]_PROG_LIBTOOL' aclocal.m4
AC_DEFUN([AC_PROG_LIBTOOL],
AC_DEFUN([AM_PROG_LIBTOOL], [AC_PROG_LIBTOOL])
because of the extra [.
