Is guile-config reliably installed for versions of guile
later than some number X?  In that case, maybe you could
simply require version X or later...

I do sympathize.  I cross-compile lots of stuff, and only
recently have I learned how to deal with foo-config
scripts in that context.  (Only just recently
got a grip on libtool, too.)
