Thanks for noticing this difference and pointing it out!  I could
easily have gone a day without noticing that the code being executed
was different between the working OS and the "broken" OS.  The
question now is what is the portable fix?  What is the effect if the
backslashes are unquoted?

I am curious to know which OS is correct according to POSIX.
