More than likely there was a /usr/local/bin/echo program present when this libtool was installed, but it was later removed.

/usr/local/bin/libtool[393]: /usr/local/bin/echo:  not found
/usr/local/bin/libtool[562]: /usr/local/bin/echo:  not found

/usr/local/bin/libtool[565]: /usr/local/bin/echo:  not found
/usr/local/bin/libtool[566]: /usr/local/bin/echo:  not found

The command that is being executed is..

LTVER=`libtool --version | grep ' libtool)' | \
          sed 's/.*) \([0-9][0-9.]*\)[^ ]* .*/\1/' `

I am running SunOS 5.9
