And, to reply to myself, yet again. This is, apparently, a feature. My bug
on this has now been closed as "Correct Behavior" 3 times, I have shouted,
screamed, begged, pleaded, thrown insults. It is still "Correct Behavior".

Apparently, the previous behavior, allowed incorrect symbols to be used...
I'm awaiting an explanation of this, and will probably still be waiting the
day I die...
