It turns out to be more complicated than I thought. If somebody else
wants to pursue this, please ping me, I'll send what I have. Otherwise
I'll let it be.

Tried that, looks like I will need several tries to get that right.
So I'll let the same as above apply: if we have another volunteer,
I'll hand over.
We're still doing much better than we did for Autoconf and Automake
(sigh).
