http://code.google.com/p/lilypond/issues/detail?id=2658It turns out that running Ghostscript (basically as a poor man's viewer) on the resulting PS file and its conversion to PDF yields quite different results. For better or worse, it does not appear that the stroke-adjusted clip region survives the conversion into PDF, at least not with suitable quality.
The improvement in the images rendered directly from PS (like PNG generation), however, seems quite substantial.
