This reverts commit 0bc7f77ff63d9aa044f7d75f9cce255ed2afc0f2, reversing
changes made to f4b89d77328e7b583ff9ab287973e9a8b0884a54.

Since this is a non-trivial revert with possible effects on later
commits, submitted as a full issue.
