I changed it because pending (playing) notes are now administrated
centrally (using busyGrobs), and grobs do not contain pitch
information. Note heads are graphic objects, not musical. Perhaps we
can add a pitch field to the note heads if there is a real need, but
I'd prefer not to. However, starting with a chord, without explicit
contexts (as in the example that you showed) is always a bad idea.
