Sorry, I was very busy typesetting music yesterday - seeing the problems from a
user-perspective rather than from a developer-perspective.
It seems like lilypond does not fulfill its own types.
If one does i.e. c-+ an articulation script with articulation-type = "stopped"
(a string) is made - even though that the articulaltion-type typechecks to
"symbol".
If one does \property Voice.NoteHead..., a Music Element with symbols = NoteHead
is made - even though that symbols should be a list.

Please don't disallow the user to do stuff that lily does itselves.
