This is unfortunetely a very bad idea. You should definitely try to
compile with kpathsea in order to be able to run smothly.

Did you remove config.cache before rerunning configure? Please see the
instructions at the end of http://lilypond.org/wiki/?LilyPondInstall.
If it still doesn't work, send us more details about where you have
kpathsea installed and what configure reports about detection of kpathsea.
