The problem (afaics) is that lilypond assumes that sizes are given in 1/1000 points whereas they in fact ARE given in 1/1000 ems. (em is defined as the width of "M". Though in the attached file, M has a width of only 916.667 ...?!?!?!) Problem is that I don't know (don't understand) - given an afm - how to determine em width.
