Which, of course, should be done automatically by lilypond-book.

Once I've added \usepackage{graphics}, latex is happy. But

spark:~/tmp gperciva$ dvips -o simple.dvi
This is dvips(k) 5.92b Copyright 2002 Radical Eye Software (www.radicaleye.com)
Missing DVI file argument (or -f).
Try --help for more information.
spark:~/tmp gperciva$ dvips simple.dvi  -o
This is dvips(k) 5.92b Copyright 2002 Radical Eye Software (www.radicaleye.com)
' TeX output 2005.02.02:2228' -> simple.ps
dvips: Font emmentaler-20 used in file lily-203923813-1.eps is not in the mapping file.
<texc.pro><f7b6d320.enc><texps.pro><special.pro>. <cmr10.pfb>[1
<lily-203923813-1.eps>]
spark:~/tmp gperciva$

The resulting ps displays a 5-line staff, and some vertical lines which
could be stems, and a final bar line. It lacks noteheads, clef, time
signature, etc.

like all lilypond documents, you need -u+lilypond.map
