In the build directory.  From my config.log:

    configure:7760: checking for shared libkpathsea
    configure:7778: gcc -o conftest -shared  -O2 -finline-functions -g -pipe   
-DNDEBUG   conftest.c -lkpathsea -ldl  >&5

No, if you have a shared libkpathsea, it should work.

Yes, that looks like a bug, the map file should be fixed.  Best thing
to do would be to generate the lilypond.map using generate-map-file.py
from ec-fonts-mftraced, Han-Wen?
