a similar project for embedding LaTeX equations. This is probably a good 
package to base a lily mode on, if you're interested. (sounds like a great 
idea IMHO)

PNGs suffer from limited resolution. It's probably wiser to include .eps or 
embedded .pdf files (perhaps pngs can be used as preview images, if that's 
needed).
