I noticed the same thing, and tried the mentioned change, but to no
avail.
The output is sequentially: -xzf; -xjf; and -xf. The last option is just
to make sure it was not an uncompressed tar-file.

Strange, because I am hoping this would resolve the installation of
Lilypond om my mandriva system, which aborts when I try to create the
fonts from the tar-ball of Lilypond 2.7.27. I also tried the shortcut
mentioned in the install-procedure to retrieve the fonts with
>> make -C mf get-pfa <<
but that gave the following message:
