I've noticed this. If lily "crashes" then the log window stays open and
displays all the ERRORS in your source.

If it successfully produces a pdf, then any warnings end up in a .log
file that I always forget to look at (and I got the impression that
*sometimes* it fails to create this file if it doesn't already exist -
mind you that could be because there were no warnings to put in it!)
That's actually very annoying behaviour - precisely because I do forget
to look at the log - and I've spent ages tracking down weird bugs in my
music because I didn't notice the "warning - barline in the wrong place"
message in the log file.
