lyrics auto - extender?

When adding lyrics to a voice, lilypond recognizes melisma's and tied notes, 
etc. and aligns syllabes accordingly. Wouldn't it be possible to 
automagically add extenders where the syllabe is visually shorter than the 
melisma or tied note?

Now I have to manually add extenders (` __ ') and they seem sometimes to 
slightly influence the spacing (2.11.32). Would this be user-programmable?
