What Han-Wen meant was that you do a local commit by "git commit 
stepmake/aclocal.m4 b/stepmake/aclocal.m4" (don't worry, this does not upload 
anything to the server!), add a proper headline and description in the commit 
message and then create a git patch by running "git-format-patch origin". The 
resulting file
   0001-Your-description-will-be-placed-here-but-only-the-first-line.patch 
or so can then be sent to the list (and automatically applied under your name 
and with your commit message etc. by any developer.
