As far as I can see from the source code, everything between the % and the end of the line should be ignored by LilyPond, no matter if you have a space after the % or not.
The only special case is %{ which is the start of a block comment.

Is a space required? I didn't see anything about this in the manual, so if this is an issue, it should be mentioned.
