You might be able to do an improved tablature functionality, as discussed
by Dana Emery in the thread starting here:
http://thread.gmane.org/gmane.comp.gnu.lilypond.devel/18647
I'm not sure if it's a big enough project for GSOC, but it's a chunk of
functionality that can be carved out as an independent project.
