Fine! My only concern is how easy it will be to find the Essay if it's only
available under a section entitled "Academia".

That _is_ a definite concern; I'm not completely happy with my
proposal with regards to that.

Me too. I thought the original material from which the
essay has been drawn was the best part of the documentation
as it was 3 years ago. It's already been relegated several
clicks away and currently even the links to it are broken
so I can't even remind myself what it contains exactly.

OTOH, it's easy to find the Essay from
the manuals page... and we could make sure that the Essay is the first
thing on the Academia page... so I think it'll work out.

I don't think people should have to "find" it. Newcomers
don't know it exists so obviously won't go looking for it.
Nor is it immediately obvious from the name what it is.

Alternate suggestions are still welcome, although I'd rather not keep
the current Background section, because the second-layer TOC is
already fairly long for Introduction.

I'd rather the current Background section is kept. Academic
references have nothing in common with the Essay (AFAICR).
