I think Ian is referring to Guile<  1.8 (so Guile 1.6 and earlier).

Just checked the e-mail from Han-Wen. My bad - the kludge is to support Guile 1.6.

We've been compiling the code unconditionally up to now, though, because MODULE_GC_KLUDGE is defined in ly_module.hh.
