Have a look at lily/grob.cc where the whiteout handling is defined.
I don't know if this is of interest for you, but I am currently
translating most of the definitions of lily/bar-line.cc and lily/span-bar.cc
into scheme where new bar line styles and stencils could be
defined more easily. The translation is almost done - if you are
interested, I'll
send you the file.
