I've stopped contributing to LilyPond in part because of mailing list
arguments, leading to hurted feelings and lack of sleep.
-devel used to be a nice place, but at times it is less so.
I've not come back because of patch-handling bureaucratie (and mailing
list arguments). I should be able to manage that, but for e.g. a 4
line patch, getting through all the branching, reviewing, etc, is just
more than I'm willing to invest.
With a good continuous integration environment and really automated
tests (which results are automatically, programmatically verified, as
opposed of the current regression tests which are run but not
verified), regressions introduced by a given commit would be more
efficiently detected.
