There is an engraver in circulation which merges rests: see
http://www.mail-archive.com/lilypond-user%40gnu.org/msg69645.html.
(There's also a snippet here: http://lsr.di.unimi.it/LSR/Item?id=336. It
doesn't handle MultiMeasureRest, though.)
