It seems to me that this section does mix up "Entering pitches" and
"Displaying pitches".
The question whether a note is altered is decided within input.
The question whether this note will show up with an accidental is
decided during 
typesetting and depends on the key signature, the accidental-style and
so on.

It is difficult to split up this topics clearly, however, because
any example of pitch entry will include displaying the pitches, too.
