Hi Knut,

The attached patch implements a new backend based on Cairo.
To test select the desired output formats by any combination of the
'--pdf', '--ps' and '--svg' command line options and add
'-dbackend=cairo'. The '--svg' option must precede the
'-dbackend=cairo' option.
How hard would it be to also add support for -dpreview and -dcrop in the
Cairo backend?
I'm experimenting with a workflow involving LilyPond-generated cropped
SVGs, and I find that the SVGs generated via Cairo cause much less
trouble than those made with the old SVG backend. (Of course, I can work
with manually-cropped SVGs for the time being.)
Thanks so much for working on the Cairo implementation!
