To add to my original post, an added benefit of shifting tablature fret numbers 
of a chord out of a straight vertical column is that the space between 
tablature lines can be decreased because collisions can be avoided between two 
numbers by, for example, moving a number just to the right of the number on a 
higher string (there are subtleties in the behavior according to the specific 
music, but those details can be left for later). Of course, if there is not 
sufficient horizontal space between tablature chords and subsequent chords or 
numbers, then the reader may not know whether the chord is a chord or a series 
of notes.

This feature is somewhat like standard notation when notes in a chord or 
multiple voices would collide if the note head is not flipped such as the b' 
and c'' in the following tiny example.
