I found the solution. Of course it was already (somewhere) in the
manual.

says:

For printing the LaTeX document, you will need to use dvips. For
producing PS with scalable fonts, add the following options to the dvips
command line:

      -Ppdf -u +lilypond.map
"

and that did the trick, although I couldn't find the option -u in the dvips 
info file.
I could have taken a look at this page earlier :)
