Thanks for all your answers.
The '_' is the simplest option, as \skip never skips more than one note
and so is hard to type and read.
So, alternative lyrics will go like
bassWords =\lyrics {
_ _ _ tra- la- la, _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ tra- la- la
}
or something similar.
