I also got the 256 return code from dvips/ps2pdf when I had used a
self-compiled (and broken) ec-fonts-mftraced package in Debian
GNU/Linux. Try runnning the command that gave the error without `2>&1'
and if it craps out telling you something of a missing symbol or font or
whatever this is probably your problem too. I.e.:
$ dvips -t "letter" -u+ec-mftrace.map -u+lilypond.map > -Ppdf
myredeemerlives
I have 0 ecperience with cygwin, but maybe the most recent
ec-fonts-mftraced (or equivalent of course) package in cygwin is broken,
or you compiled it yourself? In the first case you might try compiling
it yourself or try to get an older known-tobe-working ver, in the latter
case try using the 'official' cygwin version.
