Lilypond 2.8.1 slow on WindowsXP

Lilypond 2.8.1 seems to be very slow on my system; WindowsXP SP2.
2.6.5 worked perfectly, but 2.8.1 takes several minutes before the prompt
box comes up.

I have tried 
    lilypond --verbose "myfile.ly"
discussed in other threads, and it seems to stop when it comes to "Building
font database"

It creates a file ".lilypond-2.8.1-font.cache-1" in "c:\documents and
settings\username" but the file is always 0 bytes in size.
The file ".fonts.cache-1" created by Lilypond 2.6.5 is 993 bytes.

Could anyone help?
