as erik mentioned, the part combiner is slated for rewrite, so big changes are out of the question. It's possible to take some settings (such as the threshold) out of an alist defined in the input file.
At this point, I wonder why the functions in part-combine.scm were unnested (by whom?), which makes this slightly more involved.
