Read LM 1 Introduction.  If you don't like what you see, consider
NR 5.6.5 Proportional notation.

Read AU 3.4.1.  (that info should be in 3.4 actually... another
thing for me to fix if I ever get somebody whom I can delegate NR
1 to...)
