since /usr/bin is already part of the PATH variable of the operating
system, just type

lilypond my_file.ly

in a terminal, and the operating system should find it for you.

(by the way, I hope you've uninstalled the previous versions before
installing the tgz package).

And if your computer has enough memory, you may want to install Java:

... and then jEdit with its LilyPondTool plugin:
