Thanks a lot! It took me awhile to figure out how to open that file on a mac. I only changed the size of the noteheads:

startGraceMusic = { \override Voice.NoteHead #'font-size = #-5 }

and I think it looks fine. That is, it's easier to tell the grace notes apart.

But you'll have to change more than font-size, potherwise you'll get little noteHeads with long stems... sort of giacommetti-like music ;-)

So far I can't tell you something else than : see the grace settings in *.../ly/engraver-init.ly*, line 638.
All the preset properties for grace notes are listed and set.
