They got the PDF right from the start.

Well, I think I'll just skip on another iteration, having received the
printed magazine with the first part of the article (I happen to have a
subscription, or I would not have noticed).  The table-of-contents
closeup for that article was made from one of my Lilypond graphics, so
it is quite clear that the publisher was able to make use of one of the
provided scalable graphics versions.

Though I have heard nothing from the publisher or editor himself, I have
a distinct hunch that any additional investment of work would not
actually be useful.
