I almost always end up with separate scores for layout and MIDI.
dynamics = { s4\f\> s4*3\! s4\p s4 }
right = \relative c'' { c d e f g a }
left = \relative c' { c d e f g a }
\score {
\new PianoStaff <<
\new Staff = "up" \right
\new Dynamics \dynamics
\new Staff = "down" \left
>>
\layout {}
}
\score {
\new PianoStaff <<
\new Staff = "up" <<
\right
\dynamics

\new Staff = "down" <<
\left
\dynamics

\midi {}
}
... but see <URL:

I don’t know the answer to that, sorry.
