How is that different from \partial 4*3?

I ended up using \partial 4*3 in the short alternative endings, which
results in correct layout, but still gives bar-check errors.  (Indeed,
the 2.12 doc recommends \partial,

\partial should only be used at the start of a piece. I don't have the 2.12 docs, but look at http://lilypond.org/doc/v2.16/Documentation/notation/displaying-rhythms#upbeats, under "Known issues and warnings", at the end of the section: "The \partial command should be used only at the beginning of a piece. If you use it after the beginning, warnings or problems may occur, so use \set Timing.measurePosition instead.".
