These are completely different things. With "xe- non" the hyphen is considered the third character in a syllable and will be rendered as the hyphen character. "xe -- non" is the way to write syllable separators for lyrics. This will give you the control over the spacing, conditional repeat of the dash etc. But the output isn't a letter but a line (or even a rounded rectangle IIRC). Urs
