Hmm, I guess my example was too tiny. Here it is, again, modified; I need the
mf marking to be outside the slur but the p marking inside.
\version "2.17.95"
\relative c {
\override Slur.outside-staff-priority = #555
f16\mf( f a'8\p a8)
}
