It seems that you have to apply \autoBeamOff BEFORE a beam group starts. You
can manually start/stop beams by using brackets:
% --------------------------------------
\version "2.18.2"
\relative c'' {
c4 b a \autoBeamOff g16[ b] a8
}
% --------------------------------------
